Like every year, the CONANP (National Natural Protected Areas Commission) with the support of the Brownsville Gladys Porter Zoo ran and operate the Sea Turtle´s Camp facilities installed on the Port of Altamira lighthouse area providing the necessary care and attention to the Kemp´s Ridley Turtle.
Just a few weeks before the completion of the 2012 season, the camp has registered and monitored around 500 nests and released more than 35,000 hatchlings, which translates into a good reproductive year for the conservancy of this kind of sea turtle.
Accounting with more than 256 thousand hatchlings successfully released since the inception of this program in 2000.
It should be noted that companies located in the Industrial Port Complex participated by bringing their families to hatchlings liberation events, and encouraging them the importance of preservation and care of this endangered species.
These activities reaffirm the commitment of the Port of Altamira and its community to sustainable and ecological projects and preservation of animal species.
