By the end of December the Port of Altamira handled 16.02 million cargo tons and attended 1, 711 vessels.
The specialization and efficiency of the maritime terminal installed and the availability of the Port of Altamira sources and services are still the best option in the Gulf of Mexico to make external trade operations and develop new business.
Talking about containerized cargo, 4.8 million tons were operated, which represents the handle of 578, 685 TEU´S, increasing in a 6% compared to last year. One of the factors that motivate this growth was the operation of new maritime services that MSC and Maersk; both shipping lines, have incorporated to the Port of Altamira.
In break bulk, 1.6 million tons were recorded, which means a 37% increase. Within import products that had more movement are; steel (sheet, roll and pipe) also 37, 838 automobiles and trucks were mobilized by 2012.
The Port of Altamira confirms its leadership in fluids activity handling 4.9 million tons. As main products we have: liquefied natural gas, which is used for electric power production, and other products like paraxylene, vcm, styrene, mono ethylene glycol, among others, which are the basic raw material of the zone industries.
Talking about mineral bulk, 4.1 million tons were operated, being coal mineral, ilmenite, fluorite, manganese, the ones that have more movement at the Port.
Agricultural bulk recorded a considerably increase of 86% compared to last year, mobilizing 319 million tons, we can find as main products corn and sorghum.
That’s how the Port of Altamira it’s placed this 2012 as one of the most important ports in the country with a notorious potential growth in cargo handle, such as the reception of new investments for industrial development.
